McKenzie Families, In anticipation of full federal and state approval for Pfizer pediatric COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 5 to 11 years of age, Lane County Public Health is announcing information for parents and guardians. Over the past few months, Lane County has been working with local pediatric and family care practices, pharmacies, community-based organizations, and schools to develop a comprehensive strategy to meet the demand for pediatric vaccinations in the first few weeks of availability. LCPH estimates that Lane County is home to approximately 25,000 children aged 5 to 11. While national surveys suggest that about one-third of parents will seek vaccinations for newly eligible children as soon as possible, the Lane County pediatric partnership has developed the capacity to meet a demand of 40% (approximately 10,000 kids) within the first several weeks of eligibility. Lane County has designed multiple clinic models to meet individual needs: Indoor clinics at the Lane Events Center Auditorium will ultimately have the capacity for over 400 children per day. School-based clinics in partnership with Lane Education Services District and Lane County’s 16 school districts operating in the afternoons and evenings following regular school dismissal. Community-led pediatric clinics in partnership with our community-based organization partners to ensure vaccine equity. Effective November 9th, all LCPH clinics will be by appointment. The scheduling tool is now live. Click here for more details: https://conta.cc/3qbPIk0

McKenzie Families, Each year, we come together as a community to celebrate the beginning of the school year, as well as the unique partnerships and resources available to our students and families. We break bread together, connect with old friends, make new ones, and then tour the school and classrooms to see the learnings that have happened thus far in the year. Due to COVID-19, we were forced to move this celebration of the McKenzie community online. Although We Are McKenzie Night may look a bit different than years past, we hope to continue the celebration of our incredible community and school virtually. Please see below our schedule and connectivity info for our sessions! Go Eagles! Mr. Tompkins Click here for the full schedule: https://conta.cc/2Z2Enb6
The 2021-2022 school year is off to a strong start with the return of our full-length day after the transitions and sacrifices of last year's Comprehensive Distance Learning and abbreviated return to campus to end last year. A great deal of thanks is due to our families, staff and students for their flexibility and creativity navigating COVID and the Holiday Farm Fire! You are what makes McKenzie the special place it is! Our team is truly grateful for our students, staff and community. Many parents and community members requested more communication from the school this year, so we are bringing back the "From Mr. Tompkins' Desk" Blog. Mr. Tompkins hopes this additional line of communication is worthwhile and helps close the information gap that some of our McKenzie community is feeling. It is also his hope that this blog can be another avenue to communicate our theme of Gratitude this school year. McKenzie students and staff will be taking time each day to demonstrate gratitude for all we have. Studies show that sharing gratitude increases happiness in both the person giving gratitude as well as those receiving it. After the year and a half we've had as a school and community, who couldn't use a little bit more happiness? We are truly grateful for our students, staff and community members! McKenzie Families, We had a wonderful first day back to school! It was great to see all of our students filling the hallways of McKenzie. We thank you for your continued patience as our teachers and staff adapt to students back in classrooms with additional health precautions. Reminder: Hours: Students can arrive on campus starting at 7:45 a.m. School runs from 8 - 3:50 p.m. Meals: We are excited to share that all of our students will continue to eat free breakfast and lunch under the USDA Community Eligibility Provision. Bus Routes: Click Here for the latest schedules. Thank you so much for being so patient as we continue to navigate road delays and schedule changes. This year finds us again beginning the school year blanketed by wildfire smoke. The Middle Fork Complex to the south and fires in northern California are providing the majority of the pollution. We are keeping exterior doors and windows closed as much as possible to reduce smoke infiltration. Depending on the Air Quality Index level, outdoor activities such as PE and recess may be limited for all or some student groups. As lunch is not a strenuous activity, we will continue to serve meals outdoors unless air quality rises to the Very Unhealthy or Hazardous levels. Please reach out to us to ensure we have accurate medical records if your student falls into a sensitive group, such as having heart or lung conditions. The protective layers put in place to help protect staff and students from COVID-19 will remain to help keep our classrooms a safe refuge from the smoke. These layers include face coverings, six feet physical distancing, hand hygiene, air movement provided by our HVAC system, and portable HEPA filter systems in classrooms. Wildfire smoke will likely continue to be a concern until we get significant rainfall in the area. Until then, we will continue to monitor local air quality, the Oregon Wildfire Smoke Information website forecast, and forecasts from area fire incident management teams. Should the long-range forecast include days in the very unhealthy and hazardous levels, school may be canceled. When the decision to cancel school is decided, we will communicate the closure through the usual channels, including radio, television, website, McKenzie App, FlashAlert, email, phone call and text. If you haven't updated your contact info with us yet this fall, I encourage you to do so. We have a wonderful year ahead and I am here to answer any of your questions and concerns. Go Eagles! We want to thank them this week and every week. Make sure to send notes of thanks and encouragement to these heroes. A simple thank you card goes a long way.
In case you missed it, our District School Board voted to waive construction excise tax (CET) payments on residential and commercial building construction, replacing the buildings destroyed by the fire and future natural disasters. The waiver applies to the property owner during the emergency event and their family members who may have taken ownership. We will be working with Lane County to establish the best way to provide the funds to those who have already paid their CET on their rebuild. We know it's such a hard time for our community and our board wanted to do the right thing for our fellow community members as we look to the future.

We are sad to announce that Pam Sullivan will be retiring at the end of the school year. Please help us congratulate her! Pam has been the glue that has held our middle and high school together. Over the years, she has performed her job with calm professionalism and she rose to the challenge on all occasions. Pam says she had the perfect job, the best kids, the best staff, and was always treated with respect by everyone at McKenzie! She goes on to say her 25 years at McKenzie were a blessing and privilege! Congratulations on your retirement, Pam. You will be missed.
Kelly Shaw has some great mental health advice for our families as they navigate distance learning and the possibility of returning to campus. We are lucky to have this support. https://youtu.be/zHjgss3tV5M
Dear McKenzie Family Member, Thank you for your patience and understanding over the last couple of months. We know it has been one of the hardest years of many of our lives. As you know, we are carefully planning for a safe return on March 15. That being said, there are many obstacles for our district to tackle that goes beyond COVID. We are trying our best to meet that March 15 target, but that could change if challenges like connectivity and vacant positions on campus aren't remedied. Like many of you, we want to see those smiling faces back in class, but the health and safety of your student will always be our priority. You are receiving this letter because your student is enrolled in grades 1, 2, or 3 and is in the target group for our hopeful return on March 15. For us to plan for a safe transition back to campus, we would appreciate you taking the time to complete this survey about your student and family’s plans for the remainder of the school year - https://forms.gle/odL2nTUxT69z1iAs5 Families that choose to keep their student home will still have access to their classes through Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL) as they have for the first half of the school year. There will likely be scheduling changes for CDL students, and we will keep you updated as planning progresses. Here's what we are hoping a day will look like on campus: Students will attend from 8:00 am - 2:00 pm, following the approved district calendar. Students may arrive on campus as early as 7:45 am in preparation for their health and safety screening. Transportation will be provided to and from the school. Free breakfast and lunch will also be available to all students, in-person or learning from home. Students will be required to follow all state mandated safety guidelines. Students will be required to wear a face-covering that covers their nose and mouth. Students will be expected to stay 6-feet apart, and students will eat lunch with their class. Our welcoming back committee continues to work on additional safety measures that we will share with you in the coming weeks. As mentioned above, our school and community face several additional challenges beyond COVID-19 caused by the Holiday Farm Fire. Right now we are without a permanent, reliable internet connection. We need to be connected to the internet to serve all of our students on campus. We are still diligently working to fill much-needed staffing positions, especially in the transportation department. If you or someone you know may be interested in driving for us, please visit https://mckenzieschool.tedk12.com/hire/index.aspx and apply online. Without an additional bus driver and custodian returning will be difficult, so please share this with anyone who may fit the job description. We know you will have many questions in the coming weeks, and we will continue to offer weekly messaging to keep you updated on anything new. We are looking forward to having students return to campus soon as we support all of our students in furthering their education! Go Eagles!, Lane Tompkins Superintendent Mckenzie School District Click here for more information: https://conta.cc/3uwEWov
McKenzie families, After weeks of careful planning, our school reopening committee decided to recommend Monday, March 15, as a safe target for allowing students to return for in-person instruction for grades 1, 2 and 3. We hope to welcome back Preschool, Kindergarten, 4th, 5th and 6th grades the week after Spring Break. This will allow teachers to collaborate and mindfully plan for a supportive transition. Middle and High School grades will tentatively follow in subsequent weeks. An announcement with further details for those students will be released by March 19th. Since November, we have been safely providing in-person distance learning support on campus to more than four dozen students. These students include elementary, middle, and high school. We recognize the need to continue offering this service for those students even when we welcome our first, second and third-grade students back on March 15. We have highlighted a tentative daily schedule below. You may have started to notice other districts in our area reopening, but we are battling additional obstacles because of the devastating wildfires that affected our community. Our internet connectivity remains a problem. We have been working with state and local resources to ensure that the internet is restored on campus so that when we welcome back students, there is a stable internet connection. We are hopeful we will be fully connected by the middle of March. Another obstacle has been the debris left from the fire. We continue to clean up the campus, but more needs to be done when removing trees that still present a hazard. Thank you for your continued support through this challenging year. We hope that by setting these goals for reopening, our families have a reasonable amount of time to make plans to return. We look forward to welcoming our students back, but our priorities will always remain our staff and students' health and safety. We know it has been frustrating at times, and we are still here for you. Keep in mind our decision is based on current COVID conditions. If cases were to grow significantly in our community, we would have to make additional adjustments. We ask that our school families follow all of the recommended CDC guidelines so that we can continue to serve our students in-person. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask us. Our reopening committee has been working hard to find a safe solution for our McKenzie families hoping to return to campus. We know you are anxious to hear about our plans and we are getting close to a decision. One of our biggest obstacles has been securing stable internet connection. As we prepare to welcome back students, we want to be sure everyone can remain connected. Here’s a message from Mr. Tompkins, with more to come this week. https://youtu.be/FhNRpOlwaSA

We are so proud of your efforts during a very challenging quarter. You have been already working to learn with COVID-19 and then overcoming hurdles created by the Holiday Farm fire. You have continued to show us how much you value education. We want to remind you the end of the quarter is now December 3. As a district, we are offering middle and high school parents two options during the first and second quarters. You can choose to have your child receive a letter grade or opt for a pass no pass option. We believe that offering multiple options may alleviate some of the stress students and families face while navigating distance learning. Parents of middle and high school students should call the high school office 541-822-3313 or email firstname.lastname@example.org and share which option you’ve chosen for your student. The deadline to share your choice is Tuesday, December 1st. The district is working hard to find additional options for students to access staffed support for their Comprehensive Distance Learning classes. We hope to have some good news in the coming weeks. Your physical and mental health is our top priority, and we will continue to look for ways to make sure this school year remains a positive experience for you and your family.

Hi Eagles! Here’s a message from Mr. Tompkins and a good reminder of safe practices as we head into the two-week statewide freeze implemented by Governor Brown. Please do your part so we can get together again soon. https://youtu.be/JnYQkjl5Nc8
Hello McKenzie River Community School Families, After much discussion, the McKenzie School Board voted to add additional days to the school year and shift the calendar. The move is meant to maximize the learning time disrupted by fall wildfires. The Holiday Farm Fire devastated our community and caused students to miss valuable distance learning time. The School Board voted to add six school days to the year, all of the new days landing on Fridays. They also adjusted the quarters because of the additional days. The first quarter will end on December 3, the second quarter on February 11, and the third quarter on April 22. The last day of school will be June 17. Graduation will not be affected and will remain on June 12. Distance learning has been challenging for all of us. We thank you for your continued support and flexibility as we work to make sure your children are getting all of the necessary instruction they need to be successful this year. We have attached a picture of our new schedule so your family can keep track of the changes.
Hello McKenzie River Community School Families, We wanted to alert you to a likely change in our school calendar. The Holiday Farm Fire has devastated our community and that’s why the McKenzie School District Board of Directors will vote on a revised schedule tomorrow. Each proposed option will add back at least six instructional days and shift the end of the quarters accordingly. The first quarter will now end on December 3 instead of November 5. The second quarter would end February 11 instead of January 28. The third quarter would end on April 22 instead of April 8. The end of the school year is a significant difference between the proposals. One would maintain the current end of the year, June 17. The other would add another week to the end of the year and close the year on June 24. Graduation would not be affected and remains scheduled for June 12. Thank you for your continued patience and understanding as we try to navigate during COVID and the Holiday Farm Fire. The education of your students remains our top priority. The Board will hold a Special Meeting this Thursday at 5:30 pm. You can find the agenda here: www.mckenziesd.org/o/mckenzie-school-district/page/district-board-upcoming-agenda

If you have not had a chance to fill this out yet, please do so. It will give us valuable information to help us plan to get you the educational and support services you need for your student(s) and children as we move forward through the end of the calendar year. Congratulations to Elaine Bryson, who was appointed to the McKenzie School Board. We are so lucky to have her advocating for our students. Bryson was a past district employee and served as the Director of Programs/Grant Writer. She has been a member of this community for more than 25 years. As a parent of a McKenzie School District graduate, she says she feels she will be able to support the Board, Administration, staff, and our community during this unprecedented difficult time.

Hello McKenzie Families, Well done last week kicking off the 2020-2021 school year! Although it looks much different that what we are used to, we did it! When staff went up river, it was great to see familiar faces and check in on the families we have had little to no contact with. It was also an opportunity to see first hand the state of the school and the community. It was a hard but rewarding day, thank you to all who were able to make it out. This is a friendly reminder that teaching staff will be at Guy Lee Elementary tomorrow, Tuesday, October 6, 2020 from 2-2:30 PM to meet with families that are currently in "town"(Eugene/Springfield/surrounding areas), on the down river side of the closure or that have not had a chance to meet with teaching staff yet. We look forward to seeing you there! #mckenziestrong

Speaking the Dutch language with him for the first two years of his life was so much fun. To this day, Cedric still has the accent, tongue, and technique, necessary to pronounce those guttural Dutch G’s. As a musician, and as a father, I saw Cedric as a fun kid playing with a keyboard and other music toys growing into a young man with a passion for classical music, absorbing everything from the intricate scales, the tempo, and rhythm changes, to get to know the background of those composers, who’s talent and inspiration are capable to produce some of the most beautiful sonata’s or etudes available. Cedric spends so much time in his room behind his computer on his clarinet until he gets it right. Hour after hour of practice will it take until he feels he is worthy of playing the piece for us and others. With the help of his music teacher(s), Cedric is on his way to go study under one of the world's leading clarinetists at the University of Oregon this fall. I have no doubt Cedric will climb to the highest level of what he would like to achieve, for his ambition reaches further and beyond what he currently is capable of. I can’t wait until the day I see him perform on the grand stage and I will be so proud of him, as I am of him now. Congratulations Cedric!"

As many of you may know we had to evacuate campus today due to a bomb threat. During this evacuation all students and staff were safe and accounted for. Students and staff alike did a wonderful job of adhering to our evacuation procedures and protocol. Local law enforcement and partners have determined that the campus is safe and we plan to be in session tomorrow Tuesday December 18th. Naturally, there are a lot of conversations happening at home tonight with your students about today's events. The younger students may not know the specifics of the threat. Many of the older students however, may be aware of the nature of the threat. We will have a Care Room open tomorrow for student and staff use; a counselor will be available. Typically we would like to send communication home with students after an incident but due to limited access to buildings, we were unable to do so. Thank you for your patience, understanding and support. If you have any further questions feel free to contact the Elementary at (541)822-3315 or High School at (541)822-3313.
