I would like to welcome everyone to the start of a new academic year here in the McKenzie School District. My name is Jim Thomas and I am your new superintendent.

I come to the district with some 22 years of administrative experience, 15 of those as a small school district superintendent. Even though there have been opportunities in my career to manage larger districts, my heart has always been in working is small rural schools.

The first administrative job that I had in Oregon was in Detroit Lake, followed by Riddle, Monument, Scio, Milton-Freewater and Reedsport. Between Milton-Freewater and Reedsport, I served three years in Craig Alaska. All of these schools were rural and in most cases somewhat isolated.

Small schools give one the chance to get to know the students, the staff and the community on more personal levels.

I look forward to the opportunity to serve the district and to get to know each and everyone of you. My office is open to visitors and staff alike at nearly any time on the days that I am in the district, which currently looks like Mondays and Thursdays for sure and on other days when I either have appointments or I want to accomplish special projects. I do have an open door policy, so if you want to drop by to talk shop or just to say “hi”, you are welcome at any time.
