Hello McKenzie Community,

As all of you are aware, our community is dealing with unprecedented wildfires, and their impacts are being felt across our District. Because of the dynamic nature of the fires and associated smoke hazards, this is a fluid situation that is very difficult to predict.

Currently close to one half of our district is under the Lane County Sheriff’s Office boundaries for possible evacuation, with some areas under evacuation orders at this time. Due to these developments, as well as the smoke hazards and overall fire unpredictability, we have decided to postpone the start of school until Monday, September 11. We will evaluate the status of the fires, the health and safety issues facing our students/ staff and post an update over the weekend.

An evacuation center has been set up by the Red Cross in the New Gymnasium, and is available for those affected. In addition, a trailer from Animals in Disaster of Lane County is stationed next to the baseball field to provide shelter and care for household pets. Thank you all for your patience and understanding as we go through these trying times.
