Dear McKenzie Parents and Community,

It is with a heavy heart that I write to you concerning the shooting at Umpqua Community College this morning. As of right now, the media is reporting 13 deaths and at least 20 injured. I wanted to write you as I'm sure you'll be asked questions by your students as the news spreads.  Know that our counselor will be available Monday to speak with students who feel they may benefit from a listening ear.

Please rest assured that this is a safe place and we're all working together to keep it that way. This Fall, McKenzie School District staff received training from Lane County Sheriff's Department in ALICE Protocol, a new method to address situations such as the one that occurred today. We'll be sharing more about ALICE with you as we begin rolling it out in classrooms. Know that a great deal of thought and deliberation has been put into creating age appropriate ways to teach our students ways to help maintain the safety of McKenzie Schools.

As a community of educators and learners, we are all affected when students and educators are harmed while pursuing the light of knowledge.

Thank you for all the work you do supporting your students and helping make this the caring place as it is.

Thanks,
Lane Tompkins
Principal
